Wilson）1988年組合了一個新詞：「生態多樣性」（biological diversity =biodiversity），在這個概念中，物種的歧異度要更重於物種的數量（豐富程度），讓基因庫能夠盡可能的實現多樣化。但是這個物種多樣性的價值當前卻遭受無情的打擊，在「物種多樣性補償」（biodiversity offsets）這一個即將大行其道的新興市場經濟觀念下，物種多樣性脫去了神聖不可侵犯的光環，出現在販賣區的價格表內成為可以討價還價的項目。 閱讀全文
